Ringfort (Cashel), An Machaire, Co. Donegal

Atop a knoll in An Machaire, County Donegal, stands the remnants of a stone cashel that once served as a fortified homestead.

This subcircular enclosure, measuring 23.5 metres across its north;south axis, showcases the ingenuity of early Irish defensive architecture. The stone wall that defines the site remains remarkably intact in places, reaching heights of up to 2.38 metres on the southwestern side, whilst the northern and northeastern sections relied on the natural slope of the hill for protection rather than built defences.

The cashel's most intriguing feature is its southern entrance, which has been deliberately sealed off by a later rectangular structure measuring 2.4 metres east;west by 1.5 metres north;south. This blocking suggests the site underwent significant changes in use over time, perhaps reflecting shifting security concerns or changes in ownership. The original builders chose their location wisely; the elevated position provided both defensive advantages and commanding views across the surrounding landscape.

The site's strategic placement near productive agricultural land and Loughros Beg Bay to the north hints at a settlement that balanced defence with access to resources. The proximity to both pasture and arable land suggests this wasn't merely a defensive structure, but rather the centre of a working farm that needed protection during uncertain times. Today, the partially collapsed walls offer a tangible connection to Ireland's ringfort tradition, when thousands of such enclosures dotted the countryside as symbols of local power and agricultural prosperity.
