Ringfort (Cashel), Maulagow By.), Co. Cork

On a west-facing slope in Maulagow townland in County Cork, a stone enclosure sits quietly in pasture, its walls still standing to a height of nearly two metres.

That kind of preservation is not especially common. Most early medieval ringforts in Ireland, which were typically enclosed farmsteads built between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries, survive only as earthen banks and ditches, softened by centuries of weather and agricultural activity. A stone-walled example, known as a cashel, tends to survive better simply because its material is more durable, and this one retains enough of its original fabric to give a clear sense of what it once enclosed.

The enclosure is roughly circular, measuring sixteen metres north to south and eighteen metres east to west. The wall itself is substantial, not merely a boundary marker but a genuine defensive or at least protective structure, built to a width of about 1.6 metres. Along the southern side, a low stone bank survives at the base of the wall, an additional foundation element that adds to the impression of deliberate, considered construction. The interior has been cut into the hillside to the east, creating a level or semi-level living space, while the western side is raised above the natural slope. This kind of terracing is a practical response to sloped ground and is a feature seen at other cashel sites across Munster. A gap of about two metres in the southern wall likely served as the original entrance, a modest but functional opening that would have been easily secured or monitored.
