These structures, known in Irish as raths or lios depending on their construction and regional tradition, served primarily as enclosed farmsteads for the farming families and petty lords who populated the landscape long before towns and parishes organised Irish life into recognisable shapes. There are estimated to be around 40,000 surviving examples across the island, which means that in many parts of rural Ireland a ringfort is never far from view, yet individually they tend to slip into the background, absorbed into field boundaries or overgrown with scrub until they become almost invisible to anyone who does not know what they are looking at.

The name Danesrath is itself worth pausing over. Place names incorporating the element rath, an Old Irish word for a ringfort, are scattered across Kilkenny and the surrounding counties, and the prefix Danes reflects a folk tradition, common in medieval and early modern Ireland, of attributing ancient earthworks to Viking or Danish builders. In almost every case the attribution is incorrect; these enclosures predate or are entirely unconnected to Norse activity in Ireland, but the name stuck, and today it serves as an accidental record of how later generations tried to make sense of structures whose origins had grown obscure. Kilkenny's landscape is particularly dense with early medieval archaeology, shaped by centuries of Gaelic settlement before the Anglo-Norman arrival in the late twelfth century transformed the region's political and architectural character.
