Ringfort, Dangan, Co. Kilkenny

In the townland of Dangan in County Kilkenny, a ringfort sits in the landscape, its circular earthworks marking out a domestic enclosure that would have been a familiar sight across early medieval Ireland.

Ringforts, known variously as raths or lios depending on regional tradition, were the farmsteads of their age, typically consisting of a raised circular area surrounded by one or more banks and ditches. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, and the one at Dangan is among those that have been formally recorded as a monument, placing it within a long-established tradition of Irish field archaeology.

Beyond its classification and location, the available detail on this particular site is thin. What can be said with confidence is that ringforts as a monument type are generally associated with the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, and that they served as the enclosed homesteads of farming families, sometimes housing a single household and its livestock, sometimes representing the seat of a minor lord. Their earthen banks, often topped originally with timber palisades or thorn hedging, provided a degree of security as well as a clear demarcation of property and status. The Kilkenny landscape retains a reasonable number of these survivals, though many have been lost to centuries of agricultural activity.
