Ringfort, Molum, Co. Kilkenny

In the townland of Molum in County Kilkenny, a ringfort sits in the landscape, largely unannounced.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths or lios depending on regional usage, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, and yet each one represents a household, a family, a working farm from roughly the period between 500 and 1000 AD. The example at Molum is one of these quiet survivors, recorded but as yet little publicised.
