They served primarily as farmsteads, the defended homes of farming families rather than military fortifications in any grand sense, though the raised banks would have offered a degree of security for livestock and inhabitants alike.

Aghadrinagh as a place name carries the Irish element meaning "field of the blackthorn", suggesting a landscape that was once characterised by scrub and thorny hedgerow, the kind of terrain that would have bordered cleared agricultural land in the early medieval period.
