Ringfort (Rath), Ardglass, Co. Cork

Something has been quietly disappearing at Ardglass in north County Cork.

A ringfort, the type of circular enclosed farmstead that once numbered in the tens of thousands across Ireland during the early medieval period, has been slowly losing its shape to the land around it. What survives today is a slightly raised circular area, roughly thirty metres across in each direction, defined by a fosse, the term for a ditch or trench cut around an enclosure. The earthen material now sitting inside that fosse appears to have come from a bank that once stood beside it, suggesting the original defensive ring of raised earth has been levelled at some point, its material tipped back into the very ditch it was dug to complement.

The site's gradual transformation is legible through a sequence of Ordnance Survey maps. The 1842 six-inch map shows the enclosure rendered with hachures, the fine radiating lines surveyors used to indicate an earthwork with visible relief. By 1905 and again in 1936, the notation had shifted to describe simply a circular area enclosed by a fosse, a quiet cartographic signal that the raised bank had by then largely disappeared. What those maps cannot show is the possible souterrain recorded within the interior. A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage, typically associated with early medieval ringforts and thought to have served for storage, refuge, or both. Its presence here, if confirmed, would connect this modest, abraded earthwork to a whole domestic and social world that once organised itself around enclosures like this one across the Irish countryside.
