Ringfort (Rath), Ardgroom Inward, Co. Cork

On a steep south-facing slope near Ardgroom in the Beara Peninsula, a circular earthwork sits quietly among rough grazing land, its banks still standing to a considerable height after well over a thousand years.

What makes this particular rath, or ringfort, quietly arresting is not just its preservation but its later life: at some point after its original use, the enclosed interior became a burial ground, layering early medieval domestic history with something altogether more solemn.

Ringforts are the most common archaeological monument type in Ireland, built predominantly between the sixth and tenth centuries as enclosed farmsteads for a single family or small community. A bank of earth, sometimes reinforced with a stone facing, would encircle a living area, offering a degree of protection for people and livestock. This example measures roughly 28 metres north to south and 31 metres east to west, with an earthen bank that rises to about a metre on the interior but reaches 3.55 metres on the exterior when measured from east to west, the natural slope of the hillside contributing to that dramatic exterior height. On the western side, the same effect is achieved by a sharp natural rise of around 2.1 metres. The interior was cut into the hillslope on its northern edge and falls away to the south, giving the enclosed space an uneven, slightly vertiginous quality. A gap in the bank to the southwest likely marks the original entrance. The decision, at some later and unrecorded point, to use this space as a burial ground is not unique in Ireland; the enclosing banks of a rath would have made it a legible, bounded, and already ancient-feeling space, lending a kind of inherited sanctity to the ground within.
