Ringfort (Rath), Ashleypark, Co. Tipperary

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, are among the most common ancient monument types in Ireland, typically built between roughly 500 and 1000 AD as enclosed farmsteads, with an earthen bank and outer ditch protecting a family's home and livestock.

The one at Ashleypark in County Tipperary follows that familiar template in most respects, but at some point in its more recent history somebody returned to it with different intentions entirely. Beech trees were planted within the enclosure, and the site was adapted for use as a tree-ring, the kind of ornamental woodland feature associated with demesne landscaping. The result is a slightly uncanny layering: early medieval earthworks quietly repurposed as a garden feature, with the two functions now inseparable from each other.

The enclosure itself is slightly oval rather than strictly circular, with a bank roughly two metres wide that stands about a metre above the interior and nearly two metres above the ground outside. Beyond the bank lies a substantial outer fosse, the term for the ditch that was typically dug to provide the material for the bank, here some five and a half metres wide. What makes the internal arrangement more unusual is a low earthen bank running east to west that bisects the western half of the site, and a stone feature on the western side that forms a ramp up to the top of the main bank. There is also a defined entrance on the eastern side. Whether these internal details are original to the early medieval phase of the site or introduced during its later adaptation is not recorded. Adding another layer still, an aerial photograph taken in 1974 revealed a rectangular enclosure immediately to the south-east of the ringfort, a different form entirely from the circular rath and possibly representing an altogether different period of use in the surrounding area.
