Ringfort (Rath), Ballincloher, Co. Kerry

Some archaeological sites are remarkable for what survives.

This one is remarkable for what does not. At Ballincloher in north County Kerry, a ringfort, the type of circular earthen enclosure built in early medieval Ireland as a farmstead and family enclosure, once stood in the landscape. By the time anyone thought to look for it in any systematic way, it was already gone, replaced entirely by a quarry.

The ringfort appears clearly on the Ordnance Survey maps produced in 1841 and 1842, drawn as a circular enclosure in the manner the surveyors used for such features. By 1916, when the next comparable mapping was carried out, it had vanished from the record entirely, and the quarrying activity that displaced it had taken its place. The disappearance falls somewhere in that seventy-odd year window, a period of considerable upheaval in rural Ireland, when land use shifted, old earthworks were levelled for agriculture or industry, and the significance of such features was rarely understood locally, let alone protected. Ringforts of this kind were once extraordinarily common across Ireland, with tens of thousands estimated to have existed, yet a substantial proportion were lost precisely in this way, during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, to quarrying, drainage, and field clearance.

There is nothing to visit here. The site, as a site, no longer exists in any meaningful sense. What remains is a name on an old map and a gap in the landscape where something early medieval once stood.
