Ringfort (Rath), Ballintotty, Co. Tipperary

At Ballintotty in County Tipperary, a low earthwork sits on a gentle northward slope in ordinary working farmland, easy to overlook and easier still to misread.

What appears at first glance to be a natural rise in the pasture is in fact a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, one of the thousands of roughly circular enclosures built across Ireland during the early medieval period, typically between the fifth and twelfth centuries. These were farmsteads, not fortresses, enclosed by earthen banks and ditches to manage livestock and mark out the territory of a single family or household. This one at Ballintotty measures just over forty-one metres across, defined by a scarp rising about a metre above the surrounding ground and an outer fosse, a defensive or boundary ditch, roughly five and a half metres wide.

What gives the site a particular layer of interest is the evidence of later interference. Sometime after 1956, when the Office of Public Works carried out an inspection and left a record of the monument's condition, someone dug a circular drainage ditch into the interior of the enclosure, effectively creating a raised central platform within the original ring. The fosse itself was recut on its southern and western sides, presumably as part of the same agricultural drainage work. A possible outer bank, only about forty centimetres high, survives partially on the northern arc, and there is a gap in the north-western quadrant that may mark an original entrance or a later breach. The modifications are relatively recent in the long span of the monument's existence, but they complicate any straightforward reading of the earthwork, layering twentieth-century land management over something considerably older. It is a quiet illustration of how these sites have continued to be used, adapted, and gradually reshaped by the farms that surround them.
