This one in Ballycrenode, County Tipperary, does the opposite: it has vanished so completely from the landscape that only old maps confirm it was ever there. A rath, or ringfort, is a roughly circular earthen enclosure dating from the early medieval period, typically built as a defended farmstead, and thousands of them survive across Ireland in various states of preservation. This particular example survives in none at all. The south-east-facing pasture slope where it once stood offers no earthwork, no ridge, no dip, nothing to suggest that anything of significance ever occupied the ground.

The first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map, surveyed around 1840, recorded it clearly: a large, roughly circular enclosure sitting on that gentle slope, with a field boundary running along and incorporated into its eastern side. That detail alone hints at how the site was slowly absorbed into ordinary agricultural use, its ancient banks repurposed as convenient field divisions. By the time the second edition map was published in 1904, only the south-east quadrant of the enclosure was still indicated, meaning that within roughly sixty years of the first survey the structure had already been reduced to a fragment. Sometime after that, even the field boundary on the eastern side was removed, and with it the last physical trace of the site disappeared entirely.
