Ringfort (Rath), Ballydavid, Co. Tipperary

At Ballydavid in County Tipperary, just below the crest of a hill on a south-facing slope, a roughly circular enclosure sits quietly in the grassland, used now for cattle but shaped by hands working more than a thousand years ago.

This is a rath, the most common type of ringfort found across Ireland, typically a farmstead of the early medieval period enclosed by one or more earthen banks. What makes this particular example worth pausing over is how legible it still is, how much of its original form can be read in the ground despite centuries of farming pressure around it.

The enclosure measures roughly 31 metres north to south and 33 metres east to west internally, with a flat-topped bank of earth and stone running around its circumference. That bank survives well from the north around through the east to the south, standing between half a metre and one and a half metres above the surrounding ground on its outer face. On the northern arc, the bank flattens at the top and several large stones protrude from its surface, hinting at the structural core beneath the turf. Beyond the bank, a fosse, or defensive ditch, is still traceable from the north around to the south-south-east, though field boundaries have filled it in at the south and west, the points where modern land use has most encroached on the older layout. The original entrance survives as a wide causewayed gap, five metres across, on the eastern side, broad enough to have admitted livestock or a loaded cart, and the interior of the enclosure remains flat and largely undisturbed. Two cattle gaps cut through the bank at the north and south-south-east show that later generations adapted rather than abandoned the space, pressing an ancient boundary into ordinary agricultural service.
