At Ballyenahan in north County Cork, a ringfort sits on a natural rise in tillage land, its earthworks so thoroughly levelled that the untrained eye would pass straight over it. What remains above ground amounts to a semicircular arc, roughly 40 metres across, of barely perceptible raised ground curving around the crown of a low hillock. The site announces itself not through drama but through subtlety, and in certain seasons it reveals itself best not to the person standing on it but to the camera looking down from above.

A ringfort, or rath, is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically defined by one or more circular banks and ditches. They were the standard unit of rural settlement in Ireland from roughly the fifth to the twelfth century, and thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation. This one was still legible enough in the nineteenth century to be recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, where it appears as a hachured, slightly oval enclosure measuring approximately 35 metres by 40 metres. At some point after that, agricultural activity levelled the banks to the point where the oval plan is no longer visible as an earthwork. It survives instead as a cropmark, the buried ditches and disturbed soils causing differential growth in the crops above, an outline that shows up in aerial photography. A second ringfort lies approximately 60 metres to the south-west, suggesting that this corner of north Cork was once a reasonably settled agricultural landscape, with neighbouring enclosures in close enough proximity to imply shared or successive occupation of the same ground.
