Ringfort (Rath), Ballyerra, Co. Cork

A near-perfect circle of earth and stone sits quietly in pastureland above the Owenacurra river in east Cork, its proportions almost mathematical: thirty-six metres across in both directions, as if drawn with a compass.

The bank that defines it, built from dumped stone rather than cut and shaped masonry, still stands to around 1.6 metres in places, though it has long since been colonised by vegetation. A fosse, the external ditch that would have made the enclosure more formidable, survives to the north and runs around to the south-south-east, reaching a depth of roughly 1.2 metres at its deepest point.

This is a rath, the most common type of enclosed settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically dating from somewhere between the sixth and twelfth centuries. Raths were built by farming families rather than kings or lords, and their banks and ditches were less about military defence than about marking territory, enclosing livestock, and projecting a degree of social standing. What makes this example quietly interesting is the detail of its entrance: a gap in the bank on the south to south-south-west side, accompanied by what appears to be a causeway crossing the fosse. That arrangement, where a raised crossing aligns with the opening in the bank, is a characteristic feature of original rath entrances rather than later breaches. The interior slopes gently down toward the south-west, in the direction of the Owenacurra, and is now thick with ferns.
