Ringfort (Rath), Ballygowney, Co. Kilkenny

On the crest of a hill in Ballygowney, a quietly odd detail gives this early medieval enclosure away: its interior is wetter than the surrounding land, colonised by reeds that have no particular reason to be growing on a hilltop.

The raised platform, roughly oval and measuring about 35 metres east to west and 32 metres north to south, sits about one and a half metres above the surrounding grassland, and the shallow dishing at its centre, only 20 to 30 centimetres deep, is apparently enough to collect and hold water through the winter months. It is a small puzzle, and one that most people walking the ridge would probably not stop to consider.

The site is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common monument type in the Irish landscape. These were enclosed farmsteads, built and occupied roughly between the fifth and tenth centuries, their raised banks and surrounding ditches marking out a homestead rather than a military fortification. Here the enclosing element is a fosse, a rock-cut or dug ditch, running around the outside of the platform and measuring about four metres wide. It survives in reasonable condition along the southern arc, but has been all but erased elsewhere, reduced to something barely traceable at ground level. The entrance, on the south-south-east side and approximately four metres across, has probably been widened at some point after the monument fell out of use, as was common when such earthworks were pressed into service as field boundaries or simply cleared for easier passage. The hilltop position is notable: there are open views north and south along the ridge and across the valleys to the south-east and north-west, which would have made the site both practical and legible in the early medieval landscape, visible to those approaching from some distance.
