Ringfort (Rath), Ballymurphy, Co. Cork

In the farmland around Ballymurphy in County Cork, an east-west field fence runs straight across the landscape in the way field fences do, except that at one point it bisects something considerably older.

A roughly circular earthwork, about 32 metres across, has been quietly absorbed into the agricultural geometry of the land, its original outline now doubling as a boundary between fields.

The site is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common type of early medieval monument in Ireland. Ringforts were typically enclosed farmsteads, their circular earthen banks defining a domestic and often defensive perimeter around a family's home and livestock, most dating to somewhere between the sixth and tenth centuries. Here, the enclosing bank survives to an internal height of around 1.1 metres, though it is heavily overgrown, and the fosse, the external ditch that would originally have reinforced the bank's defensive character, is still traceable along the south-east to south-west arc of the circuit. Two gaps interrupt the bank, one to the north at roughly 6 metres wide and one to the west at around 4 metres, which may represent original entrances or later breaks made to accommodate farming activity. The interior, like the bank itself, is described as heavily overgrown, suggesting the site has been left to its own devices for some considerable time.

What makes this particular example quietly worth noting is less any dramatic feature than the way it illustrates how these monuments persist. Thousands of ringforts survive across Ireland in various states of completeness, but many have been erased by agricultural intensification. This one endures, folded into the field system around it, its bank still legible in the landscape even as bramble and scrub reclaim the interior.
