Ringfort (Rath), Banduff, Co. Cork

There is nothing to see at Banduff, and that, in its own quiet way, is the point.

A level stretch of pasture above a south-facing slope holds the memory of a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, which was a circular earthen enclosure typically built during the early medieval period as a farmstead or defended homestead. The ground gives nothing away. No bank, no ditch, no change in the grass. Locals have long referred to it simply as the site of the "fort", which is its own kind of preservation, a place-memory persisting after the physical form has gone.

The enclosure was substantial enough in its day, measuring approximately forty metres in diameter, and it was still legible on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1935, recorded there as a hachured circular outline, the cartographic shorthand for an earthwork. At some point after that it was levelled, probably by agricultural improvement, leaving no surface trace. In 1999, excavation work directed by Lane reopened part of the site and found what the eye could not: the northern arc of the fosse, the external ditch that would originally have ringed the enclosure, along with evidence of the bank that once sat inside it. The ditch and bank together formed the defining structure of a rath, marking the boundary of a farmstead whose inhabitants worked this same south-facing ground more than a thousand years ago.
