Ringfort (Rath), Barrahaurin, Co. Cork

A small field in Barrahaurin, County Cork, holds the barely legible remains of a rath, a type of circular earthwork enclosure used in early medieval Ireland as a farmstead and domestic compound.

What makes this particular example quietly compelling is the documentary trail of its disappearance. The 1842 Ordnance Survey six-inch map shows the enclosure clearly, hachured into a neat circle of roughly twenty-five metres in diameter. By 1904 and again in 1939, later editions of the same map show it already open on its south-western side, the bank visibly retreating. The site sits in pasture above the Dripsey River valley, and the gradual erasure of the earthwork almost certainly owes something to the agricultural pressures of that landscape over the intervening decades.

By the time P. J. Hartnett examined the site in 1939, the bank had been erased to the west and south-west, though traces of an outward fosse and a second rampart were still detectable. A fosse is simply a defensive ditch, typically dug just outside the enclosing bank; the presence of a second rampart would have placed this rath among the more substantial examples of the type, suggesting the enclosure once had a degree of status or required more serious defence. Associated with the site is a standing stone, a separate prehistoric upright, which suggests the area carried significance across different periods long before the rath itself was constructed. The pairing of a ringfort with a pre-existing standing stone is not unusual in the Irish landscape, where later communities often settled near, and perhaps in relation to, monuments already ancient in their own time.
