It is a rath, one of the thousands of roughly circular earthwork enclosures built across Ireland during the early medieval period, typically serving as a defended farmstead for a single family or small community. What makes this one worth pausing over is the way it has been caught mid-disappearance, neither fully erased nor fully legible.

The enclosure measures approximately thirty metres across internally and was originally defined by two earthen banks with a fosse, or ditch, running between them. That double-bank arrangement would have made it a relatively substantial construction in its time, the extra circuit suggesting either greater resources or greater concern for security on the part of whoever built it. Today, the outer bank survives clearly only along the southern and western arc. Along the northern and eastern sides, it has been folded into the modern field boundary, the old earthwork quietly repurposed as a convenient division between pastures. The original entrance has been lost entirely, its position no longer readable in the surviving ground.

This kind of slow absorption is common with raths across Ireland. Farmers rarely demolished them outright, partly because the raised ground and existing banks made useful field margins, and partly because folklore long attached misfortune to anyone who disturbed a fairy fort, as such sites were popularly known. The result is a landscape full of enclosures that are neither ruined nor intact, but somewhere in between, their geometry legible only to those who know what the slight rise and curve of a grassy bank is likely to mean.
