Ringfort (Rath), Baunnanooneeny, Co. Cork

A quiet pasture in north Cork conceals something that takes a moment to read correctly.

What looks at first like an uneven field, a slight rising and falling of the ground, resolves on closer inspection into a double-banked ringfort, its concentric earthworks still legible after more than a thousand years of farming around and, inevitably, through them.

A ringfort, or rath, is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth century. Most were the homes of farming families of moderate status, the banks and ditches serving less as military defences than as boundaries marking territory and keeping livestock secure. This particular example at Baunnanooneeny sits on a gently south-east-facing slope and measures roughly fifty metres east to west and forty-six metres north to south, making it a reasonably substantial enclosure. Two earthen banks surround the interior, separated by a fosse, the ditch between them. The inner bank, standing to about 1.3 metres in height, survives best along the western to north-eastern arc. The outer bank, around a metre high where it is intact, has been partially absorbed into the modern field fence system, which is a common fate for these monuments across the Irish countryside. A faint trace of an external fosse persists to the west, and the intervening fosse between the two banks is at its deepest on the uphill side, from west through to north-east, where drainage and erosion would have concentrated over the centuries. The entrance faces south-west, a common orientation in Irish ringforts, possibly for practical reasons of shelter or morning light. Inside, the ground slopes gently southward, and there is a shallow depression just within the inner bank, the purpose of which is not recorded but which could reflect the site of a former structure or simply centuries of settling.
