This is a rath, the most common type of ringfort found across Ireland, essentially a circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks that once protected a family's home, animals, and outbuildings. The bank here encloses a roughly circular area of thirty-eight metres in diameter, and in places its outer face retains traces of stone cladding, a detail that suggests some care was taken in its original construction. The interior surface is noticeably uneven, which is typical of sites where structures once stood and have long since decayed back into the soil.

Writing in 1939, the archaeologist P. J. Hartnett noted that the site originally had an outer fosse, a defensive ditch running around the outside of the bank, though by his time it had been largely filled in. Faint traces of it were still visible to the north when he recorded the site. The removal of surrounding field fences since then has left the monument somewhat exposed in the open pasture, which has the effect of making its circular geometry easier to read from a distance, even if the landscape context has changed considerably. The fort sits on ground that looks out over a stream valley to the south, a positioning that is entirely characteristic of the period: early medieval farmers consistently chose elevated spots near water, balancing the practical needs of drainage, visibility, and access.
