The rath, a type of ringfort typically built as a defended farmstead during the early medieval period, has been levelled almost entirely into the surrounding pasture. Only the possible outline of a gently curving scarp is still readable across the ground, running roughly northwest to east, on a gentle northeast-facing slope to the east of the Dooneen-Knockatagglebeg road.

What makes the site quietly curious is the story told by two sets of maps taken less than fifty years apart. The 1846 Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded it as a circular enclosure roughly thirty metres in diameter, its southeastern arc running up against the townland boundary that cuts northeast to southwest across the area. By the time the 1894 OS six-inch map was drawn, the enclosure had apparently shrunk and shifted in outline, appearing now as a D-shaped form measuring around twenty metres northwest to southeast, still pressing against that same boundary. Whether this reflects genuine change on the ground over those decades, or simply the different judgements of different surveyors working from what was already fading, is not clear. Either way, the boundary seems to have bitten into the site, perhaps influencing both its survival and its recorded shape. Associated with the rath is a possible souterrain, the kind of underground stone-lined passage often found at ringfort sites, used for storage or refuge, its presence hinting that this was once a place of some domestic consequence even if the surface now gives little away.
