Ringfort (Rath), Cloghane, Co. Tipperary

At ground level, there is almost nothing to see.

The ringfort at Cloghane in County Tipperary has been levelled, its earthworks reduced to the faintest traces, yet the shape of an early medieval farmstead persists in the landscape with quiet stubbornness. What gives it away is the grass: subtle differences in colour and growth betray the buried remains of a fosse and outer bank where the eye finds no obvious mound or ditch.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when they were earthen rather than stone-built, were the standard form of rural enclosure in early medieval Ireland, typically serving as enclosed farmsteads for a family of some local standing. The Cloghane example is roughly oval, measuring 31 metres north to south and 36 metres east to west. Around its perimeter, a scarp of just 0.26 metres still lifts the ground in a faint circular rim, and beyond that a fosse, or defensive ditch, roughly 5.7 metres wide, has left its impression in the differential growth of the grass above it. An outer bank, between 3.5 and 5 metres wide, survives in the north-western quadrant in the same manner, visible more as a botanical signal than any topographic feature. The site sits on gently undulating ground that slopes very slightly to the south-east. It was not identified through any ground survey but through aerial photography, which remains one of the most reliable methods for locating earthworks that farming has all but erased.

For anyone who does seek it out, the experience is less about dramatic physical remains and more about the discipline of looking carefully at a field. The differential grass growth that defines the fosse and outer bank is the kind of detail that rewards patience and, ideally, low-angle light in the early morning or late afternoon, when slight variations in the land surface become briefly legible.
