The field contains a rath, the Irish term for an earthen ringfort, and within its interior sits a souterrain, a man-made underground chamber or tunnel typically cut into the earth and lined with stone. These subterranean features are found at many early medieval Irish settlement sites and are thought to have served as storage spaces, refuges, or both. That this one survives at all, quietly intact beneath working farmland, gives the site a particular quality.

The rath itself is oval in plan, measuring roughly 38 metres north to south and 32 metres east to west, enclosed by an earthen bank standing about a metre high. It is a modest but readable example of a monument type once scattered across Ireland in its tens of thousands, most dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries and representing the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval families. At Connagh, the eastern portion of the bank has been absorbed into the modern field fence system, and a gap about five metres wide opens to the northeast, likely an original or later entrance point. The integration of ancient earthwork into everyday agricultural boundaries is common across Ireland and speaks to the long, layered relationship between farmers and the monuments they work around rather than through.
