Ringfort (Rath), Coolacresig, Co. Cork

A modern townland boundary fence cuts straight through the entrance of this early medieval enclosure, bisecting the interior as though administrative convenience were the only thing that mattered.

The effect is quietly absurd: a boundary drawn on a map, probably in the nineteenth century, slicing through a structure that had stood intact for perhaps a thousand years before anyone thought to divide it.

The rath, a type of ringfort consisting of a raised earthen bank enclosing a circular interior used as a farmstead or defended residence in early medieval Ireland, sits on a south-facing slope below the crest of a ridge in the townland of Coolacresig in mid Cork. Its dimensions are substantial: the circular area measures 46 metres on the northwest to southeast axis, and the bank rises to an external height of 2.4 metres. The builders faced the inner face of the bank with stone to a height of one metre, a detail that suggests some care in construction, and finished the top with a flat surface and a slight lip along the outer edge. Outside the bank, a fosse, that is a defensive ditch, runs around the perimeter, dropping to a depth of 0.8 metres; the eastern stretch of this ditch remains waterlogged. The entrance, facing roughly east-southeast, is six metres wide and accessed by a causeway crossing the fosse. On either side of the gap, the terminal sections of the bank are built up higher than the rest, a common arrangement intended to make the approach more imposing and the opening easier to defend.

The interior is now heavily overgrown with vegetation, which makes it difficult to read the ground surface clearly. The site sits in pasture and, aside from the ungainly fence line running through it, appears to have survived without major disturbance to its main earthworks. The waterlogging on the eastern side of the fosse is worth noting as a natural feature; it may reflect the original drainage conditions on this part of the slope, and it gives that section of the ditch an unexpectedly vivid quality, still functioning, in a loose sense, exactly as it was dug.
