Ringforts

Ringfort (Rath), Cooldurragha By.), Co. Cork

On a south-east-facing slope in Cooldurragha, County Cork, a roughly circular enclosure quietly holds its ground above the waters of Lough Cluhir.

What makes this particular rath, or ringfort, quietly strange is the degree to which ordinary rural life has continued inside it, apparently oblivious to the archaeology underfoot. A vegetable garden occupies the ground near the southern bank, and a cattle trace cuts through the north-eastern quadrant, worn by animals passing from one part of the farm to another. The monument has not been fenced off or commemorated; it has simply been put to use.

Ringforts are among the most common archaeological features in the Irish landscape, with tens of thousands surviving in various states of preservation. They were typically built during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and served as enclosed farmsteads for a single family or small community, the surrounding bank and ditch offering a degree of security for livestock as much as for people. This example measures approximately 27 metres north to south and 24 metres east to west, making it a fairly modest specimen. The enclosing boundary is itself a mixture of materials and conditions: an earthen bank, heavily overgrown, survives along the northern to north-eastern arc, while a low stone wall takes over from the east around to the north-west. That variation in construction materials across a single enclosure is not unusual, and may reflect repairs or alterations made at different periods, though it could equally be original.

The setting on a break in the slope, with the lake visible below, is characteristic of how many ringforts were positioned, taking advantage of natural elevation without sitting fully exposed on a summit. The overgrowth on the bank and the continued agricultural activity inside mean the earthworks require a careful eye to read, but the outline of the enclosure, and the quiet incongruity of a working garden inside a structure well over a thousand years old, rewards the attention.
