Known in Irish as a rath, a ringfort is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically dating from around 500 to 1000 AD, defined by one or more circular earthen banks and ditches. Thousands of them survive across Ireland, yet each one marks a specific place where a family farmed, sheltered livestock, and organised daily life more than a millennium ago. The sheer number of them can make it easy to pass one by without a second thought, which is precisely what makes the quieter examples, the ones without interpretive panels or car parks, worth pausing over.

Clare is particularly dense with these enclosures, a reflection of the county's well-drained soils and the farming patterns of early Christian Ireland. The rath at Cullenagh belongs to this broader tradition, a local node in a network of settlements that once covered the Irish countryside so thoroughly that archaeologists estimate there may be upwards of forty thousand ringforts on the island. The earthworks served both practical and social functions: the banks kept livestock in and wolves out, but they also declared the status of the household within. A more substantial enclosure, with multiple banks, generally indicated a family of higher standing within the tuath, the local territorial unit of early medieval Gaelic society.
