Ringfort (Rath), Cullenagh, Co. Cork

What survives at Cullenagh in north County Cork is, by any measure, barely there.

A low rise in the pasture, roughly thirty-one metres across from east to west and twenty-eight from north to south, marks the ghost of a ringfort, the circular earthen enclosure type that served as a farmstead and family compound across early medieval Ireland. The bank that once defined it has been so thoroughly reduced by centuries of agriculture that it reads now as little more than a slight swell in the ground, set on a gentle south-west-facing slope above a small stream.

What makes the site quietly interesting is less what remains than what the maps reveal about its disappearance. On the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, the enclosure is drawn as a complete hachured circle, suggesting that at that point the earthwork was still legible enough to survey fully. By 1905 the cartographers could only record a semicircular arc running from the north-east to the south-west, the rest presumably already too degraded to trace with confidence. The 1936 edition repeats that arc but completes the circuit with a broken line, the conventional cartographic shorthand for a feature that is inferred rather than clearly visible on the ground. Taken together, the three maps chart a slow erasure across roughly a century of agricultural levelling, each edition capturing a little less of what had once been there.
