Ringfort (Rath), Cunniamstown Beg, Co. Wicklow

In the gentle, rolling farmland of Cunniamstown Beg in County Wicklow, a circular earthwork sits quietly in a north-easterly facing slope, its original entrance now entirely vanished.

That last detail is what makes this particular rath, as ringforts of this type are commonly known, slightly puzzling. Ringforts are early medieval enclosures, built roughly between 500 and 1000 AD, that once served as defended farmsteads for a single family and their livestock. They almost always have a recognisable entrance gap in their enclosing bank. Here, there is none to be found.

The surviving structure is defined by a circular area of roughly 38 metres in diameter. A bank, between four and four and a half metres wide, rises to about 1.2 metres on the interior side and slightly more on the exterior, reaching between two and 2.2 metres. Running alongside it, from the north-east around to the west, is a fosse, which is simply a ditch, here measuring three to four metres wide and dropping 2.2 metres below the level of the bank itself. On the eastern side, an additional counterscarp bank, a low ridge thrown up on the outer lip of the ditch, adds a further modest line of definition. The interior of the enclosure sits slightly higher than the surrounding ground, which may reflect centuries of accumulated occupation material beneath the turf, or simply the natural lie of the slope.

What survives is a well-preserved earthwork by most measures, its banks and fosse still readable in the landscape despite the disappearance of any entrance feature. Whether that gap was deliberately filled at some point, eroded beyond recognition, or simply never recorded clearly, is now impossible to say. The rath sits in undulating, relatively gentle terrain, the kind of setting that early farming families across Ireland favoured for its combination of drainage, shelter, and workable land.
