Ringfort (Rath), Curraleigh, Co. Tipperary

On a north-facing slope of rough upland pasture in County Tipperary, a low oval enclosure sits quietly in the landscape, its origins early medieval but its current form the product of centuries of slow collapse and reuse.

What makes this particular rath, or earthen ringfort, worth a second look is the ambiguity written into its fabric: the bank that rings the enclosure contains so much stone that it may never have been purely earthen at all, and in its most eroded stretch, to the north, something that looks very much like the internal face of a drystone wall is still just visible beneath the surface.

Ringforts are the most numerous monument type in the Irish countryside, built primarily between the sixth and tenth centuries as enclosed farmsteads for single family groups. Most are defined by one or more earthen banks, sometimes with an external ditch, or fosse, to enhance the defensive profile. This one in Curraleigh measures roughly 37.6 metres north to south and 29.6 metres east to west, making it a moderately sized oval enclosure. The enclosing bank runs to about 1.7 metres wide at the top and 3.1 metres at its base, standing somewhat higher on its interior face than its exterior, which is the typical construction logic. No fosse is visible here, and no obvious entrance gap survives. In the south-east quadrant there is a small oval mound, just 2.5 by 3.3 metres and 0.35 metres high, whose purpose is not recorded, alongside some loose stone dumping along the outer face of the bank. A later stone field boundary has been built directly against the bank on the south-west side, a reminder that working farmers in subsequent centuries simply incorporated what was already there into their own arrangements, with no particular ceremony.
