Ringfort (Rath), Dangan, Co. Roscommon

Something about this small earthwork in County Roscommon resists easy accounting.

When the Ordnance Survey first mapped it in 1837, the circular enclosure measured roughly 15 metres across. By the time surveyors returned for the 1914 edition, the recorded diameter had grown to around 22 metres, a discrepancy that likely reflects differences in measurement technique or in what was visible above ground at the time, but which quietly underlines how imprecisely these features were understood even as they were being documented.

The site is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead typically built between the early medieval period and around the twelfth century. Ringforts were the most common settlement form in early Ireland, and many thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation. This one sits on the north-west-facing slope of a broad drumlin, the smooth glacially-deposited ridge that gives this part of Roscommon its rolling character. What survives today is a scarp, essentially a low earthen bank or drop in ground level, running from the south-west around to the north, extending about 23.5 metres and standing between 0.4 and 1.1 metres high. Beyond that arc, the perimeter of the enclosure cannot be traced, having been lost to cultivation, erosion, or simply the passage of time. It is a partial thing, a fragment of a boundary that once enclosed a household or small farming settlement and now marks nothing more than a quiet irregularity in a hillside field.
