Ringfort (Rath), Derrygrath, Co. Tipperary

What makes this site quietly arresting is not what survives but what has been absorbed.

A large early medieval ringfort, a rath, once occupied the crest of a ridge at Derrygrath in County Tipperary, its roughly circular bank enclosing an area measuring approximately 67 metres north to south and 57 metres east to west. A rath is a type of enclosed farmstead, typically dating from the early medieval period, defined by one or more earthen banks that once marked the boundary of a family's home and livestock. Here, much of that boundary has been quietly claimed by the working landscape around it: a field boundary running north-east to south-west cuts directly across the monument, and the greater part of the interior has been levelled into a barley field. Only the south-east quadrant retains any real sense of what stood here, where the bank still rises to around 0.8 metres on its exterior face and spreads to a base width of over four metres.

The first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map, surveyed in 1840, recorded the enclosure clearly, giving some sense of how much has been lost or altered in the intervening period. There is no visible evidence of an external fosse, the ditch that typically accompanies such earthworks on the outside of the bank, which may suggest either that none was ever dug or that any trace has long since been ploughed away. What gives the site particular interest is its neighbourhood: two further ringforts lie close by, one just 9.3 metres to the south-east and another roughly 85 metres to the south-south-east. Clusters of ringforts like this are not uncommon across Ireland and are thought to reflect family groupings or successive generations of settlement rather than coincidence, suggesting this ridge at Derrygrath was a focus of early medieval activity rather than a solitary farmstead on a quiet hill.
