Ringfort (Rath), Drumminascart, Co. Tipperary

Some archaeological sites are remarkable for what survives.

This one is catalogued precisely because nothing does. On a south-west-facing hillside in the Tipperary townland of Drumminascart, a rath once occupied ground that is now divided by a road and covered, to the south, by a silage pit and concrete floor. A rath is an earthen ringfort, the most common type of early medieval settlement in Ireland, typically a circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used as a farmstead by a single family or small community. That so many were built across the island makes their destruction individually easier to overlook, which is part of what makes this record worth pausing on.

The site was completely destroyed around 1920, when a road was cut along the line of the townland boundary, running directly through what had been the northern half of the enclosure. Earlier Ordnance Survey mapping, both the first edition and the later revised sheets drawn at six inches to the mile, shows the boundary bisecting the site even before its destruction, which suggests the rath had long been awkwardly positioned relative to the administrative lines drawn across the landscape in the nineteenth century. Whether that alignment hastened its end is impossible to say, but the road followed exactly that boundary, and the monument did not survive it.

There is nothing to see at Drumminascart now, and no visitor detail to offer. What the place represents, if anything, is the ordinary arithmetic of land use: a road needed building, a boundary provided a convenient line, and something that had stood for perhaps a thousand years was gone within a season. The silage pit that replaced it is, in its own way, a continuation of agricultural life on the same ground, just without the earthworks.
