The enclosing bank still stands nearly three metres high, which is a respectable survival for a structure built from nothing more than piled earth and the labour of early medieval farmers. Two original gaps break the circuit, one to the south-east and one to the west-south-west, each just over six metres wide, suggesting deliberate entrance points rather than later damage. A shallow external fosse, the ditch dug to supply material for the bank itself, traces the outer edge of the enclosure.

This is a rath, the commonest form of Irish ringfort, a class of monument built predominantly between the sixth and tenth centuries AD and used as enclosed farmsteads by the free farming families of early Gaelic society. Tens of thousands once existed across Ireland; a great many have since been levelled by ploughing, but this example in Dunbittern has kept much of its profile. The enclosure measures roughly 31 metres north to south and 35 metres east to west, dimensions typical of a single-family settlement. Inside, there are subtler details worth noting: a slight concentric depression running from north-north-west around to the north-west hints at an inner ring or earlier phase of activity, and a low rise, only about 20 centimetres above the general interior level, runs from north across to the east. These interior features are modest but suggest the site was not simply a blank enclosure; something was arranged or constructed within it, even if the precise nature of that arrangement has not been excavated or formally identified.
