Ringfort (Rath), Foilaclug, Co. Tipperary

A modern road cuts straight through this ancient enclosure on the high ground of Foilaclug, slicing across the earthen bank that once defined its southern and western arc.

The intrusion is matter-of-fact and complete, the kind of thing that happens when infrastructure is laid without ceremony, and it means that a monument already difficult to read has been made harder still. What remains is a raised circular area roughly 40 metres across, ringed by a waterlogged fosse, an inner bank, and a faint outer bank visible only along the northern stretch. Reeds have colonised most of the surface, and the whole thing sits in poorly drained ground, waterlogged enough that the surrounding fosse, about four metres wide, still holds water.

Ringforts, sometimes called raths when they are earthen rather than stone-built, were the dominant settlement form in early medieval Ireland, typically associated with farming families of some means between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries. They were enclosures, not fortresses in any military sense, and the earthen bank and fosse of the Foilaclug example would have served as much to define territory and keep livestock contained as to offer any real defence. What makes this particular site quietly notable is its position: despite the poor drainage underfoot, whoever chose this hilltop had command of extensive views in every direction, a choice that speaks to something deliberate about how the site was selected. A second enclosure sits to the south-east, suggesting this was not an isolated occupation but part of a wider pattern of early settlement across the area. The ringfort at Foilaclug was not identified from ground survey but from aerial photographs taken in April 1974, which means it went unrecorded at ground level for a long time, its outlines legible only from above, beneath the reeds and the road.
