What makes it slightly odd to look at today is not its age but its interior: a crop of conifers has taken root inside the enclosure, so that from certain angles the site reads less as an ancient monument and more as an inexplicable plantation in the middle of a field.

The earthwork is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common type of monument in the Irish countryside. These were typically farmsteads of the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD, in which a family and their animals lived within a circular area defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches. This example at Gallanes measures roughly 28 metres north to south and 29 metres east to west, enclosed by an earthen bank standing about 0.8 metres high, with a shallow external fosse, that is, a ditch dug around the outside of the bank to reinforce the boundary. A gap in the southern side of the bank marks what was almost certainly the original entrance. Tens of thousands of ringforts survive across Ireland in varying states of preservation, yet most are simply grass-covered humps in fields, and it is the specific detail of each one, the precise measurements, the orientation of the entrance, the condition of the fosse, that allows archaeologists to build up a picture of how early Irish farming communities organised their land and lives.
