The enclosure, a rath, has been levelled, meaning the earthen bank that once defined its roughly circular boundary has been flattened, most likely through centuries of agricultural use. What survives is a subtle curve in a field wall that may follow the original line of the enclosure, a quiet echo of a structure that once measured around thirty metres in diameter.

The site appears on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, marked with hachuring to indicate a circular raised platform, which suggests the earthwork was still visible, if diminished, at the time of survey. Ringforts, known variously as raths or cashels depending on whether they were built of earth or stone, were the most common settlement type in early medieval Ireland, typically enclosing a farmstead and its outbuildings. This particular example, sitting on a south-facing slope with an extensive view to the south, would have offered its inhabitants both solar advantage and a clear sightline across the surrounding terrain. Possibly adding to its interest is the record of a likely souterrain in the interior. A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage or chamber, usually associated with ringforts and thought to have served for storage, refuge, or both.

The visible evidence today amounts to very little, which is itself part of what makes sites like this worth pausing over. The curve in the field wall is the kind of detail that passes unnoticed unless you know to look for it, a fragment of early medieval life absorbed quietly into the working agricultural landscape of west Cork.
