Ringfort (Rath), Garraun, Co. Cork

A low earthen bank curving across a pasture field is easy to walk past without a second glance, but the oval enclosure at Garraun in mid Cork is a recognisable survivor of a settlement type that was once among the most common features of the Irish landscape.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when constructed from earthworks rather than stone, were typically the enclosed homesteads of farming families during the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries. Tens of thousands were built across Ireland; a significant number have been ploughed away or levelled over the centuries, which makes those still legible in the landscape worth pausing over.

This particular example sits on an east-facing slope, its interior grass-covered and sloping gently downward to the east. The enclosure is oval in plan, measuring roughly 40.9 metres north to south and 36 metres east to west, and is defined on its eastern, southern, and western sides by an earthen bank standing about 1.6 metres high. The northern side is marked by a stone-faced field boundary, which may indicate that the original bank was partly robbed or incorporated into later agricultural use. A break of around four metres in the bank on the east-south-east side is likely the original entrance. Inside the bank, slight depressions along the western, northern, and eastern edges hint at features that may once have been structural, perhaps the footings of outbuildings or drainage channels. Outside the bank to the north-north-west, a shallow rectangular depression measuring seven metres by two metres adds a further layer of curiosity; its function is unrecorded, but such features outside ringfort enclosures can sometimes relate to ancillary structures or souterrains, the latter being underground stone-lined passages associated with early medieval settlement.
