Ringfort (Rath), Glantane, Co. Cork

On a gently sloping field in Glantane, north County Cork, the ground holds a secret that only a trained eye, or perhaps a dry summer, would reveal.

What was once a rath, an early medieval ringfort typically used as a defended farmstead enclosed by one or more earthen banks, has been so thoroughly levelled by centuries of agricultural use that almost nothing rises above the soil. What remains is a circular area roughly 38 metres across, marked out by a barely perceptible swell in the ground running from northwest to east-southeast, a soilmark where the original bank once ran, and a curved field boundary to the west that preserves the line of the old enclosure almost by accident.

The site appears clearly enough on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, rendered in the characteristic hachured arc that cartographers used to indicate an earthwork, its outline reinforced on the north and east by a linear field boundary. By the 1904 and 1938 editions of the same map series, the southern arc was still visible, though the northern field boundary had disappeared from the record entirely. On the ground, the process of erasure had gone further still. A researcher named Bowman noted the site in 1934, describing it as a levelled single-ramparted fort of around 43 yards in diameter on land then belonging to a Mrs Buckley. The field boundary on the western side does survive, but material dumped against it during field clearance has made it impossible to examine properly, so whatever the bank itself might have revealed about the original construction remains inaccessible.

What makes this site quietly instructive is the way the historical record traces the stages of its disappearance. The sequence of OS maps, read alongside Bowman's 1934 observation, shows a monument moving from a recognisable earthwork to a soilmark to almost nothing, all within the span of a century of intensive tillage on a north-northwest-facing slope that shows no outward sign of anything older lying beneath it.
