Ringfort (Rath), Glynn, Co. Cork

Part of what makes this ringfort quietly compelling is not what survives but what the maps reveal about what has been lost.

Ordnance Survey surveyors recorded it in 1842 as a neatly hachured circular enclosure, roughly forty metres across, sitting on a west-north-west-facing slope in pasture at Glynn. By the time later surveys were made in 1904 and 1936, sections of the enclosing bank had already been absorbed into the local field fence system, and a portion of the circuit that once ran from north-east to south-east has since been levelled almost entirely, leaving only a low undulation of earth and small stones to trace where it once stood.

What remains is still readable in the landscape. The earthen bank, standing about two metres high along the surviving southern and western arc, encloses a roughly circular interior measuring thirty-seven metres from north-north-east to south-south-west. Outside the bank, a shallow fosse, the ditch that would have been dug to provide material for the bank itself, runs about four metres wide. A low scarp continues the line around the western and north-eastern sides where the bank has diminished. Ringforts, or raths, are among the most common field monuments in Ireland, typically dating to the early medieval period between roughly 500 and 1000 AD and serving as enclosed farmsteads for a single family or small community. What elevates this particular example above the ordinary is the presence of a souterrain in its interior. A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage or chamber, built beneath the surface of a rath, and likely used for storage or as a place of concealment in times of threat. Their construction required considerable effort and planning, suggesting that whoever lived here had something worth protecting, or at least preserving.
