That smallness is part of what makes it curious. Ringforts, the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval Ireland typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, vary enormously in scale and ambition, but this one is among the more understated survivors, its bank of earth and stone standing just half a metre above the surrounding ground and measuring three metres wide. Beyond the bank runs an outer fosse, a defensive ditch of similar width and depth, which was still holding water when surveyors visited. There is also a second ringfort nearby to the north-east, which suggests this corner of Tipperary once supported a small cluster of early settlement, perhaps neighbouring farmsteads working the same upland terrain.

What makes the site quietly anomalous is its absence from the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map, the great mid-nineteenth-century cartographic effort that recorded thousands of earthworks across Ireland with considerable care. That omission means the fort either escaped the surveyors' attention or had already become sufficiently overgrown or degraded to pass unnoticed. A modern field fence now cuts across the northern perimeter on an east-west axis, a mundane intrusion that nonetheless marks how thoroughly working farmland has grown around and through the monument over the generations. Stout's 1984 survey of Irish ringforts noted the site, giving it at least some scholarly footing before its later inclusion in the archaeological inventory of north Tipperary compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien.
