Ringfort (Rath), Gortnalug, Co. Galway

On a low hillock in the rolling pastureland of Gortnalug, a ringfort sits in a state of quiet dissolution.

The enclosure, roughly subcircular and measuring about 27 metres east to west and 23 metres north to south, is the kind of monument that rewards patience and a certain tolerance for brambles. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when defined by earthen banks and ditches rather than stone, were the dominant form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically serving as enclosed farmsteads for a single family and their livestock. This one was never especially large, and time has not been kind to it.

What survives follows a familiar pattern of partial erasure. The inner scarp, the steep inner face of the enclosing earthwork, can be traced from the south-west around through north to south-east, though it is heavily overgrown with ash trees and brambles. Between the scarp and the outer bank lies the fosse, a ditch that would originally have reinforced the defensive or territorial logic of the enclosure; it survives from the south-west through north to east. The outer bank is best preserved at the south-west and from north to north-east, but along much of its south-western arc it has been reduced to a barely discernible rise in the ground. A field boundary cuts through the monument at both the south-east and south-west, and to the south of that boundary no surface trace of the enclosing elements remains at all. At the north-east, rubble cleared from surrounding fields has been piled against what remains, the kind of incidental damage that accumulates over generations of working farmland. The site is not ruined so much as gradually absorbed back into the landscape that surrounds it.
