Ringfort (Rath), Graveshill, Co. Galway

A ring of trees growing along an ancient earthwork is an odd sight in open Galway pastureland, but that is precisely what draws the eye at Graveshill.

Here, on a low hillock amid undulating fields, an early medieval ringfort sits in fair condition, its near-circular form measuring roughly 31 metres east to west and 30 metres north to south. A rath, to use the Irish term, is a type of enclosed farmstead typically built between around 500 and 1000 AD, defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches that would once have protected a household, its livestock, and its stores. At Graveshill, that enclosing element survives partly as a proper bank of earth and stone, visible along the south-western to west-north-western arc, and partly as a natural-looking scarp where the bank has worn down elsewhere.

The external fosse, a defensive ditch dug around the outside of the bank, survives along the southern to south-western stretch and again from north-west around to north-north-east, giving a reasonable impression of the original layout even where it has silted and grassed over. A gap on the eastern side may represent the original entrance, which in raths of this type was often the most carefully finished feature of the whole enclosure. More intriguing still are the low grassed-over field banks that radiate outward from the monument to the north-north-east and south-east. These suggest that the landscape around the rath was organised and subdivided, perhaps reflecting the agricultural arrangement of the farmstead that once stood here, with the enclosure at its centre and managed land extending beyond.

The ring of trees planted along much of the enclosing element, running from south through west to north-east, has become part of the monument's character, marking its outline across the hillock and making it readable from a distance even where the earthworks themselves have softened. Such planting is common around ringforts in Ireland, sometimes deliberately preserving a boundary that local memory recognised as significant long after its original function was forgotten.
