Ringfort (Rath), Kilbaha, Co. Clare

At the far western tip of the Loop Head Peninsula, where County Clare narrows to a thin finger of land pointing out into the Atlantic, there sits a ringfort near the small coastal settlement of Kilbaha.

A ringfort, or rath, is one of the most common monument types in the Irish landscape: a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, built primarily during the early medieval period as a defended farmstead or the residence of a local family of some status. That they are common across Ireland does not make any individual example less worth pausing over. In a place as exposed and elemental as Loop Head, where the land feels borrowed from the sea, the presence of a settled, enclosed community here more than a thousand years ago carries its own quiet weight.

Kilbaha itself sits near the very end of the peninsula, a place shaped more by Atlantic weather and maritime life than by the rhythms of inland Clare. The surrounding landscape is low and open, the kind of terrain where earthworks, even worn ones, tend to remain visible in the fields. Ringforts in this part of Munster were typically home to a single farming household of middling rank, the enclosing bank offering as much a statement of social position as any serious military defence. Without more detailed recorded information about this particular site, including whether it survives as an earthwork or has been reduced by centuries of agriculture, it is difficult to say more about its specific form or condition.
