Ringfort (Rath), Kilconnell, Co. Tipperary

At Kilconnell in County Tipperary, a ringfort sits in ordinary improved pasture on an east-facing slope, looking at first glance like little more than a grassy rise in a working farm field.

What makes it quietly worth attention is the way the landscape has quietly absorbed and repurposed it. The outer ditch, known as a fosse, which would originally have encircled the earthen bank as a defensive measure, has been modified at its south-east side: somebody at some point redug it and extended it outward to form a pond. A prehistoric boundary feature pressed into agricultural service, the join between the two functions still legible in the ground.

Ringforts, sometimes called raths, were the standard settlement type of early medieval Ireland, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth century. They were enclosed farmsteads rather than military fortifications in the modern sense, the bank and fosse marking out a family's living space and providing a degree of security for livestock. This one at Kilconnell is circular, with a diameter of thirty-five metres, its earthen bank still standing to an external height of two and a half metres in places, though it has been worn down to a mere scarp on the north-east side. A gap in the bank on that same north-east arc, roughly four metres wide, along with what appears to be a causeway crossing the fosse at that point, is the likely original entrance. The fosse itself has been further disturbed by the upcast soil from the dug pond, and a field boundary cuts across its outer edge to the north and east, the ordinary pressures of centuries of farming leaving their mark on something far older.

The interior is generally level and can be walked around the perimeter, though the centre has become overgrown with vegetation. The fosse-turned-pond on the east side is the most visually striking detail, a small but telling example of how early medieval earthworks were rarely simply abandoned but folded instead into whatever the land needed next.
