Ringfort (Rath), Kilkeary, Co. Tipperary

On the crest of a north-south ridge in County Tipperary, a circular raised platform sits quietly in the middle of agricultural land, its profile still legible after well over a thousand years of farming around and, increasingly, into it.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common type of early medieval settlement monument in the country. Thousands were built between roughly the sixth and tenth centuries, typically as enclosed farmsteads for a single family and their livestock, defined by earthen banks and ditches that conveyed both security and social standing.

This particular example is a substantial one. The raised interior platform measures 34 metres across and stands 2.34 metres above the surrounding ground. Around it runs a wide, U-shaped fosse, a ditch cut to a depth of over two metres and nearly six metres wide, which would have made casual entry uninviting. Beyond that sits a bank, still standing to an external height of 1.4 metres, and then a second outer fosse, giving the site a double-ditched profile that speaks to a degree of ambition or resource among those who built it. The location reinforces that impression: the ridge crest would have offered clear sightlines in multiple directions, with the ground falling away to the east and south. A few hundred metres to the north-north-east, Kilkeary church and graveyard occupy the same general landscape, suggesting that this small area carried some local significance across a long stretch of time.

The site has not been entirely spared by later centuries of land use. The northern section of the outer bank has been levelled, and silage bales have been deposited in the cleared area. The outer ditch has been partly infilled or overgrown along most of its circuit, and does not survive at the southern end. What remains is still coherent enough to read as a monument, but it is the kind of survival that rewards a careful look rather than a passing glance.
