The rise is modest, a mere 35 centimetres above the surrounding field level, and the grass grows long enough to obscure most of what remains. But that faint, persistent elevation is the ghost of a ringfort, an early medieval enclosed settlement of the kind that once numbered in the tens of thousands across Ireland. Ringforts, known as raths when they were earthen rather than stone-built, typically consisted of a raised circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and external ditches called fosses. They were the farmsteads and homesteads of early medieval Ireland, occupied roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries.

What makes this particular site quietly interesting is how long it stayed legible on maps even as it disappeared from the ground. The Ordnance Survey's six-inch mapping programme captured it in 1842 as a hachured circular enclosure, approximately 30 metres in diameter, and successive editions in 1905 and 1935 repeated the depiction faithfully. By 1935 the cartographers had also noted a fosse to the north-west. At some point between then and now the site was levelled, the banks pushed down, the ditch largely filled, the whole thing absorbed into farmland. What the maps recorded with care, agriculture quietly erased. The surviving circular platform, now measuring 36 metres north to south, is all that persists above ground, along with a slight depression that hints at where the fosse once ran, though long grass makes it difficult to follow.
