A ringfort, or rath, was a roughly circular enclosure, typically defined by an earthen bank and ditch, used as a farmstead during the early medieval period in Ireland. This one measured approximately twenty metres in diameter, which places it at the modest end of the scale, and at some point it was levelled, most likely by agricultural clearance. What remains is not a monument but a kind of negative space: a scatter of stones and a pattern of differential crop growth, the kind of subtle discolouration visible from above when soil disturbed by former banks and ditches causes crops to grow unevenly. The earth, in other words, still holds the outline, even after the structure itself is gone.

The site sits on a south-facing slope in an area of tillage, and its circular form was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, where it appears as a distinct circular enclosure abutted by a road running roughly from south-west to north-east. That early mapping is now one of the more reliable pieces of evidence for the site's existence and dimensions, since the ground itself offers little to the casual eye. The presence of a roadway running alongside the enclosure is a detail worth pausing on: ringforts frequently had associated features, including field systems and trackways, and the coincidence of an established road at this point may reflect a much older pattern of movement and use in the landscape, one that the nineteenth-century cartographers recorded without necessarily understanding its deeper age.
