There is a particular category of archaeological site that achieves a kind of paradoxical fame: the place that exists only on paper, its physical form entirely gone, its location now indistinguishable from the ordinary countryside around it.
The ringfort at Kilnaglory in County Cork belongs to that category. A rath, as this type of earthwork is also known, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, typically built during the early medieval period as a farmstead or defended homestead. This one measured approximately thirty metres in diameter, and today there is no visible surface trace of it whatsoever.
